Potemkin suffered bitterly from having nothing left to want. For when dreams turn into reality, there is an empty spot where the dreams used to be, and Potemkin had no dreams left.

About This Quote

Potemkin is a character in the unfinished unfinished novel by Nikolai Gogol, who is based on the real-life Czar Alexander's ambassador to Russia, Prince Grigory Potemkin. In Gogol's novel, Potemkin appears as a member of the Russian aristocracy who travels abroad to improve Russia's image. He makes a point of including huge embellishments in the villages he visits, such as fake palaces and staged battles. One of his most famous acts was to create a village which was made to seem like a great European city, with hundreds of fake buildings. The idea for this village came from an idea by Potemkin himself about lying, and he used this idea in order to make his escapades more exciting.
